Organic Carbon have been working with industry partners to develop a carbon credit standard for the sequestration of organic matter to agricultural land. This standard was launched in February 2022 following 18 months of development.
The Organic Carbon Code is now the UK code of practice for the sequestration of organic matter to land for the generation of voluntary carbon credits. The Organic Carbon Code (OCC) is the quality assurance standard for the sequestration of organic matter to land for projects in the UK, and generates independently verified carbon units. The code has been created by industry experts and soil scientists, providing the only code of practice in the UK for carbon sequestration to soils.
The Organic Carbon Code promotes:
- high standards of sustainable land management in line with the Code of Good Agricultural Practice including the application of organic wastes and treated materials;
- scientifically sound organic carbon measurement protocols that enable consistent and rigorous measurement of carbon sequestration in soils;
- integrity through independent quality assurance (validation);
- project registration, issuance, tracking and retirement of carbon units.
At Organic Carbon we have set out that only projects verified to the OCC will be provided through our webshop. This ensures our customers that our credits have been robustly and independently audited to an industry agreed standard of compliance.
